Victor Espinoza was born in Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico on May 23, 1972. He has eleven siblings. On the farm, he and his brother, Jose L. Espinoza, used to ride horses. He left his home at the age of 15 and traveled to Cancun to assist his brother as a Quarter Horse trainer.

To pay for his jockey training, he began driving a bus in Mexico City at the age of 17. Within a few years, he began racing thoroughbreds at Mexico City’s Hipódromo de las Américas track. He moved to the United States in 1990 and didn’t speak English then. He moved to Northern California two years later, and by 1994, he was the leading apprentice rider at the Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields racetracks. A year later, he relocated to Los Angeles.
