Tom T. Hall was born on May 25, 1936, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, United States. During his adolescence, Tom T Hall formed the Kentucky Travellers, a band that entertained people before movies at a mobile theatre.

Tom T. Hall’s Profession & Career

During his service in the army, Tom played on the Armed Forces Radio Network and wrote humorous songs about his experiences. Following his military duty, Tom T Hall used the G.I. Bill program to enroll in Roanoke College, where he worked as a D.J. Tom began his career as a radio broadcaster at WRON, a local radio station in Ronceverte, West Virginia. Tom also worked as a presenter at WSPZ in Spencer, West Virginia, which ultimately became WVRC Radio.

Tom’s big songwriting breakthrough came in 1963 when country singer Jimmy C. Newman recorded his song “D.J. for a Day.” Tom moved to Nashville in 1964 and began working as a songwriter for ‘New Keys Music.’ New Keys were a publishing syndicate owned by Newman and his business buddy Jimmy Key, and he used to write up to six-country songs in a single day. Tom was dubbed “The Storyteller” and has written songs for a wide range of country music musicians, including Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, and Bobby Bare.

“Harper Valley PTA,” one of Tom’s first successful songwriting efforts, was recorded in 1968 by a musician named Jeannie C. Riley. They sold over six million records and topped the Billboard Hot 100.

Following Riley’s performance at Harper Valley PTA, Tom began his recording career, creating several successful songs from late 1960 through early 1980. Among Tom’s most well-known tunes are “A Week in a Country Jail” and “I Love.” Tom is also known for performing children’s songs such as “Sneaky Snake” and “I Care.” Tom appeared on Season 4 of the PBS music show Austin City Limits in 1979.

Since 1994, Tom has been retired from songwriting and performing. He was last seen in 2011 during a public performance, also his first in many years.
