He began his coaching career as a receivers coach at Texas Lutheran in 1998. In 1999, he gained an advantage as a graduate assistant at the University of Texas in Austin under the guidance of Greg Davis. He worked on the offensive line throughout his time in Texas.

They finished 11-3 in 2004 and reached the Division I-AA championship semifinals. In 2005, Tom was hired as the coordinator at Texas State. His squad dominated the Southland Conference in overall offense throughout his two seasons at Texas State, and the 2005 team was rated seventh nationally in scoring.

Tom then accompanied head coach David Bailiff from Texas State to establish Rice’s new coaching staff in 2007. In 2008, Rice was placed in the top ten nationwide. Tom joined Iowa State as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after establishing one of the nation’s best offenses at Rice.

He established his mechanisms, and the offense was given new life. During his three seasons at Iowa State, the offense improved significantly and broke multiple teams and player school records. Tom was hired as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on December 9, 2011.

On December 9, 2014, Tom was awarded the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach, after leading Ohio State’s fourth-ranked offense to their first national title since 2002. Houston named Tom as their new head coach on December 15, 2014.

Despite his wins in four seasons, Tom was let go on January 2, 2021. He then joined the Chicago Bear’s coaching staff, in 2021 as an offensive analyst and special projects coach.
