Calderon was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, on February 1, 1972. Pilar Rosario Parilla and Esteban Calderon Illaraza gave birth to him. His father worked in the health department, and his mother was a teacher. His parents moved from Puerto Rico to Miami. He attended Miami Beach Senior High.

He interacted with people from various cultures while in high school. He then began working as a drummer in rock bands. When he realized his parents were fans of Ismail Rivera, he included them in his music. He introduced a musical style that combined dancehall, hip hop, salsa, and plena.

Tego Calderon began his career in the 1990s when he competed in a Puerto Rican hip-hop competition. Several contemporary artists, including Eddie Dee and Wisin Y Yandel, were discovered. Following the competition,

Tego Calderon became friends with DJ Adam and Eddie Dee, with whom he wrote several songs. Despite this, many DJs and producers refused to work with Tego Calderon. In an interview with Chente Ydrach, a podcaster and YouTube personality, DJ Adam stated that it would appear on his Mad Jam album, a seminal classic. However, he was cut from the final tracklist because his styles were simply out of date.

Tego Calderon worked as a mechanic during his learning years in order to support himself. His partnership with Eddie Dee was crucial. Eddie Dee became the most well-known and successful Puerto Rican rapper in 1999. He gave Tego Calderon a second chance when he signed him to his (Eddie’s) label alongside a fabled Boricua Guerrero entity. When reggaeton began to spread beyond its borders and become popular in the market, Eddie and Elias tasked Tego Calderon with putting together all-island albums. Among them are The Majestic, Kilates, Volume 1&2 of Mission, and Cosa Buena from Planet Reggae, to name a few.
