During his career, Steve Yzerman was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. They did, however, want to send him back to training camp for a season. He was able to score 39 goals in his rookie season. Yzerman became the NHL All-Star game’s youngest player. He was named captain of the Detroit Red Wings for the 1985-86 season.

He had 65 goals and 96 assists in the 1988-89 season. He led his team to the Stanley Cup finals in 1995. Under Yzerman’s captaincy, the Detroit Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 42 years in 1997.

His career was hampered by a knee injury during the 2001-02 season. He had knee realignment surgery in the offseason and missed the first 61 games of the 2002-03 season.
