Steven Patrick Garvey was born in Tampa, Florida, on December 22, 1948. When he was a child, his parents relocated to Long Island, New York. As a teenager, he worked as a batboy for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Detroit Tigers.

Garvey graduated from Chamberlain High School and later attended Michigan State University, where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. He credits his football coach, Duffy Daugherty, with influencing his decision to attend MSU.

Garvey began his professional basketball career in 1968 when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft. He made his Major League debut at the age of 20. He started as a pinch hitter and got his first hit-off Houston Astros pitcher Denny Lemaster. In 1970, he hit his first home run against the Montreal Expos.

Garvey was one of only two players to begin an All-Star Game as a write-in vote in 1974. He recorded his first of six 200-hit seasons that year and won the NL MVP title. He won the League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award after hitting four home runs and adding a triple in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Garvey appeared in 1,727 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers over 14 seasons, hitting.301 with 211 home runs. He was chosen for eight All-Star Games and earned the All-Star Game MVP Award in 1974 and 1978.

Garvey signed a five-year contract with the San Diego Padres in 1982. Sports Illustrated listed the signing as the seventh most OK free-agent signing in history. He surpassed the National League record for consecutive games played in his debut season with the organization and was named National League Player of the Week. Garvey had 114 hits, 22 doubles, 14 home runs, and 59 RBIs in his first 100 games. In May 1987, he made his final appearance in a game. After retiring from professional baseball, he founded Garvey Communications and worked in television production.
