Smokey Robinson was born on February 19, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He was the son of William Robinson Sr. and Flossie Robinson. His parents are of mixed French and African ancestry. His family was not wealthy when he was a child, but his parents always encouraged their son’s interests. Robinson was not only a good athlete but also an above-average student.

Robinson went to Northern High School, where he began to show off his musical talent. Following that, he enrolled in college to study electrical engineering. He later dropped out of college after only two months to pursue a career in music.

He formed the Five Chimes doo-wop group with his classmate Pete Moore and childhood friend Ronald White. In 1957, they changed the name of their band to The Matadors.

Bobby Rogers joins their group later that year. Following that, Bobby’s cousin, Claudette, and guitarist Marv Tarplin were both added to the group in 1958. The group began performing at various Detroit venues, which increased their reputation.
