Sidney Williams, born on March 3, 1942, is a US diplomat who served in the office from March 27, 1994, to January 11, 1998, during Bill Clinton’s presidency. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and grew up in Houston, Texas. He attended Wheatley High School and played high school football there. He went to Southern University in Louisiana and played college football there. Pepperdine University awarded him a master’s degree.

The Cleveland Browns (Ohio) drafted him, and his team won the NFL Championship in 1964, during his rookie season as a defensive lineman. The championship brought him fame and attention, and he established himself as a promising footballer. He also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers of Pennsylvania, the Baltimore Colts of Maryland, and the Washington Redskins of the District of Columbia.

Williams was a linebacker who appeared in 70 games. He has one touchdown and one interception in his career. He won the NFL title twice, in 1964 and 1968.

He left football in 1969 to work as a business developer for the Black Economic Union. From 1974 to 1976, he worked as a legislative aid after receiving his master’s degree in 1973. He then worked as the chief of staff for LA City Councilman David S Cunningham. He also served as project manager for the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency.

In 1994, then-President Bill Clinton appointed Sid as the first African American ambassador to the Bahamas. It was well aware that Sid lacked any political or diplomatic experience; he had served as an ambassador for four years.
