Shri Thanedar was born on February 22, 1955, in Belgaum, Karnataka, India. His father was forced to retire at the age of 55 while Thanedar was only 14 years old, hence he grew up in a low-income family. Thanedar later did odd jobs to support his eight-member family. He graduated with honors from the University of Bombay with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the age of 18.

He moved to the United States in 1979 to seek a Ph.D. at the University of Akron, which he received in 1982. In 1988, he became a US citizen. He performed post-doctoral studies at the University of Michigan before joining Petrolite Corp. as a researcher in 1984.

By 2005, Chemir’s revenue had risen to $16 million, and the company employed 160 individuals, including 40 PhDs. Thanedar borrowed $24 million from Bank of America to finance seven acquisitions, providing the bank with a personal guarantee.

One of his acquisitions, Azopharma, rose swiftly from $1 million in 2003 to $55 million in 2008, employing 500 employees. Thanedar momentarily retired in 2020 but returned later that year to co-found Avomeen Analytical Services, an Arbor-based chemical testing laboratory, with his son Neil. In November 2017, a buyer of Avomeen Holdings LLC filed a complaint in US District Court in Detroit, alleging Thanedar made false and misleading assertions about his company’s finances in order to sell the majority interest in November 2016.

Thanedar, on the other hand, disputed the charges. Thanedar entered politics when he decided to run as a Democrat in the 2018 Michigan governor race. His political agenda includes a $15 minimum wage, public education reform, infrastructural upgrades, and improved openness in government.

In August 2019, Shri Thanedar filed paperwork to run for state representative in Michigan’s 3rd district, which includes a portion of North Detroit. He has also authored two autobiographies, This is Shri’s Wish, which was published in 2004, and Blue Suitcase: Tragedy and Trump in the Life of an Immigrant, which he self-published.
