Richard Karn Wilson was born to Lousie and Gene Wilson on February 17, 1956, in Seattle, Washington. His father served in World War II as a Seabee (Construction Battalion member) (Construction Battalion member). He also has a sibling sister named Sue. Richard went on to attend Roosevelt High School as a teen, and after graduating, he enrolled at the University of Washington.

He joined the world-famous fraternity ‘Beta Theta Pi while at university. Along with that, he gained more drama and theatre experience at the Edinburgh Festival. After majoring in Drama in 1979, he relocated to New York City. He was given the opportunity to appear in a Michelob Beer commercial. The first time the advertisement was shown was during the 1980 Super Bowl. He joined the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) as Richard Karn due to an already existing Richard Wilson entry.

Richard Karn and his wife relocated to Los Angeles in 1989. Richard appeared in a few ‘Orchard Supply Hardware’ commercials in the 1990s. He worked as a part-time caterer at Jewish Synagogue events. Surprisingly, his first acting opportunity came after he went to a driving school after receiving a traffic citation. An agent informed him about the casting of a popular show called ‘Home Improvement.’

Richard Karn was cast in the role of Al Borland, which had previously been assigned to Stephen Tobolosky. Nonetheless, due to his unavailability and previous commitments, it had to be re-cast. Richard’s role was supposed to be a guest appearance in the first episode, but when the show was approved for television, he became a regular cast member. Aside from numerous films and television series, Richard has also appeared on the game show ‘Family Feud,’ where he served as the fourth host. From 2002 to 2006, he was a regular on the show.

He has also appeared in music videos such as The Strokes’ ‘Someday.’ On October 6, 2008, he took over as host of ‘Bingo America,’ replacing Patrick Duffy on the Game Show Networks’ installment. Richard also worked as a sub/optional host for GSN radio.
