Who is Rana Ayyub? Rana Ayyub was born in Mumbai, India, on May 1, 1984. She is 37 years old and born under the sign of Taurus. She is of Indian origin and adheres to Islam as her faith.

Mohammad Ayyub Waqif is her father’s name. He worked as a writer for Blitz, a Mumbai-based magazine, and was a key figure in the progressive writer’s movement. However, her mother’s name is not known until today. Rana Ayyub was able to work for the Delhi-based investigative and political news magazine “Tehelka.” She has previously been critical of the BJP in general, as well as Narendra Modi in particular. She was permitted to work as an investigative journalist, and her main task was to carry out the sting operation that served as the basis for her book Gujarat Files. Unfortunately, at the conclusion of the sting operation, Tehelka’s management declined to print any piece written by Ayyub or based on the material she acquired. She did, however, continue to work with Tehelka for several months.

Similarly, Ayyub is now self-sufficient. However, in September 2019, she was appointed as a contributing writer for the Washington Post’s Global Opinions section. Then, in October 2020, HarperCollins India released an open letter penned by Ayyub in response to the contentious selection of actor Gajendra Chauhan as Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

Furthermore, as an investigative journalist working alongside Tehelka, she was allowed to embark on a project to execute a long-term sting operation targeted at snaring Gujarat politicians and government officials. She then spent almost 10 months disguised in order to befriend her selected targets. During this time, she was even able to get a regular monthly payment from Tehelka. However, the information she gathered was insufficient.

She wrote a book called “Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover-Up.” During the preparation of the book, she documented the full transcripts of recordings made by a disguised recording device of several Gujarat bureaucrats and police personnel. During this period, she was also embroiled in a feud with “Tehelka.” Similarly, her novel was lauded by a large number of individuals, including celebrities. In 2018, she was named the “Most Resilient Global Journalist” by the Dutch non-profit Free Press Unlimited for her ability to resist attempts to suppress her work.

Rana Ayyub received the Sanskriti Award for excellence in journalism, the Global Shining Light Award for her undercover investigation revealing the state’s top officials’ complicity in the 2002 Gujarat riots, and Free Press Unlimited’s Most Resilient Journalist Award for continuing her work “despite being harassed both online and offline and receiving death threats.”

She was also awarded the McGill Medal for journalistic bravery, as well as the Muslim Public Affairs Council of USA’s 2020 Voices of Courage and Conscience Award. Similarly, Ayyub has been identified by Time magazine as one of the 10 worldwide journalists who pose the greatest danger to their life and has been highlighted by The New Yorker.

Threats of death

In the year 2018, Rana Ayyub received several murder and rape threats on Twitter. They made her personal information public at the same time that they released a deep false pornographic movie. She did complain to the police, but the case was closed owing to the inability to discover the perpetrator. Furthermore, the UN Human Rights Office urged Indian authorities to “act immediately to safeguard” her from death threats following an internet hate campaign.
