Cruz made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2005 after signing with the New York Mets organization in 1998. He had a breakout season with the Texas Rangers in 2009, hitting 33 home runs.

In 2014, he led the major leagues with 40 home runs while playing for the Baltimore Orioles. Cruz also topped the American League (AL) with 119 RBI while playing for the Seattle Mariners. He hit 346 home runs in the 2010s, the most of any player during that time period.
