Nelly Furtado was born in 1978 to Maria Manuela and António José Furtado. Her birthplace was Victoria, British Columbia, which is located in Canada. Her parents are of Portuguese origin, originally from the Azores on So Miguel Island. Throughout the late 1960s, the parents settled in Canada.

Her name was inspired by a Soviet-based gymnast, Nellie Kim. Michael Anthony and Lisa Anne are her two siblings. All of the children were raised as Roman Catholics. She began performing when she was four years old and even sang in Portuguese.

This was when she met Tallis Newkirk, a member of the well-known hip-hop group Plains of Fascination, during a visit with her sister Lisa Anne inside Toronto after she finished class eleven.

Following her graduation from secondary school in 1996, the singer relocated to Toronto to live with her sister, Lisa Anne. The following year, she formed Nelstar, a trip-hop duo formed in collaboration with Newkirk.
