Mohanlal Viswanathan was born on May 21, 1960, in Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta region, Kerala. Mr. Vishwanathan Nair, a lawyer, and government employee, and Mrs. Santhakumari, a housewife, are his parents. After they moved to Mudavanmugal, Mohanlal went to his maternal home in Thiruvananthapuram.

He began his acting career at Thiruvananthapuram Model School. He was chosen as the best actor in the school for the stage play “Computer Boy,” directed by Veloor Krishnankutty, in which he played the role of a ninety-year-old man. He graduated from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram, where he formed a close friendship with a few other students who were also interested in and passionate about theater and feature films.

In recent years, he formed an association called Bharath Cine Group with these friends and began work on his first film, Thiranottam. From 1977 to 1978, he was Kerala’s wrestling champion.
