Dicky Eklund, his older half-manager, brothers was a well-known and successful boxer in Massachusetts, having competed in 190 amateur contests. Ward made his professional boxing debut in 1985, and he struggled to distinguish himself from amateur boxing from the start. Dicky, his brother, began training Micky after his career was completed. He won the first two fights with incredible discipline and a tremendous left hook to the liver. Later in his career, his career began to decline due to a long-term injury that prevented him from using his right hand in fights, and by then, his brother was a drug addict. He couldn’t provide Micky with surgery funds.

After quitting boxing, he began working as a road worker and eventually as a sub warden in the local prison. He saved money for the long-awaited operation, which took a year to recover from. He returned to training after his friend persuaded him, and after a year, he returned to the ring.

On his return, he won nine consecutive fights over boxers such as Alfonso Sanchez, Louis Veader, and subsequently, Vince Philips, albeit he lost due to a nasty cut.

Later, he battled for the champion title with the latter, which he won, as well as victories over Emanuel Augustus, Reggie Green, and Shea Neary. He also competed in the light Walter division, which allowed the competitor to travel fast around the ring. He made the first of the trilogy with Arturo Gatti in 2002, defeating him by a majority decision. Micky lost the fight six months later, as well as the third fight in 2003. Ward’s final fight was his last, but it paid him $3 million, and he left the sport to create his own business.
