Mary Hart began her television hosting career in 1975 at WMT-TV, which was eventually renamed KGAN. She ultimately joined KMTV before moving to KTVY in 1976; it changed its name to KFOR-TV, where she co-hosted a show called Dannysday with Danny Williams. She intended to leave journalism and traveled to Los Angeles in 1979 to work as a sales representative for the Yearbook Company.

She became destitute after leaving her job and decided to audition for a small role on the serial series Days of Our Lives. Mary earned another television presenter gig on NBC in 1981, but the show was canceled four months later, prompting Entertainment Tonight (ET) to interview her. Later, she was hired by Entertainment Tonight to co-host a show alongside Ron Hendren.
