Truex debuted in the Busch Series in 2001 at Dover International Speedway in his father’s No. 56 Chevrolet. He began in the 19th position and finished in the 38th position. He started the season with his father’s team in 2003 before Dale Earnhardt Jr. hired him to race his No. 81 Chance 2 Motorsports Chevy. He then made his debut with his Chance 2 at the Richmond International Raceway, where he finished sixth.

Martin went to the No. 1 Del Chevy full-time in the Nextel Cup Series in 2006. He subsequently had two top-five performances before finishing 19th in points. After a few weeks, he won the Autism Spoke 400, his first Sprint Cup Series victory.

In 2012, he began by finishing seventh in the Daytona 500 and winning a $200,000 bonus.
