He was also a member of the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) Explorers program, which is an organization for young people interested in careers in law enforcement. However, he was murdered by the Dominican-American gang Trinitarios in the Bronx’s Belmont area.

Due to a misidentification, the gang murdered Junior in the Bronx with a machete and a knife. On June 20, 2018, around 10:30 p.m., he left his residence to meet with a buddy. He grew terrified after leaving his flat and ran for many blocks while being pursued by gang members in the cars. Then he hid in a bodega near his residence on Bathgate Avenue and East 183rd Street in Belmont, the Bronx.

When he and others watched the attack but were unclear of the situation, the store owner barred him from sheltering behind the counter. After sensing his trepidation, the business owner relented and let him work behind the counter. However, one of the gang members noticed him and carried him outside, where the other three gang members were waiting. Following that, multiple gang members began attacking him with huge knives and machetes.

Furthermore, the incident was filmed on CCTV inside the business, and a homeowner captured the cell phone footage from the building’s higher levels. In addition, the cell phone footage shows more gang members arriving and departing the crime site. Junior returned to the business after the incident, but he was escorted out.

After staggering out of the bodega, he began jogging east on 183rd Street toward St Barnabas Hospital, which was one block away. In cell phone footage, he slumped on a step at a security booth a few yards from the hospital entrance. Furthermore, he died within minutes after the bodega attack. According to his sister’s boyfriend, a Trinitario gang boss stated on Snapchat that the killing was a case of mistaken identification. Furthermore, the group eventually apologized to his family on social media for the murder and dismissed the perpetrators from the gang. After the terrible footage of the murder began to circulate on the Internet, the public was enraged. Police arrested fourteen members of the Trinitario gang in connection with Junior’s murder.

After nearly a year, the court convicted five of the five alleged defendants in his murder outside of the Bronx bodega. On June 14, 2019, a jury in the Bronx convicted Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, Manuel Rivera, Elvin Garcia, Jose Muniz, and Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, gang assault, and conspiracy.
