Kim Bendix Petersen was born on June 14, 1956, in Copenhagen, Denmark. King began his career with a two-year-old band called Brainstorm. He included vocalist Jeanette Blum as well as guitarist Michael Frohn. Diamond left the brainstorm band after two years and joined a Danish hard rock band to sing regionally. He experimented with a venomous quasi-satanic stage character in the band.

Following a brief stint with the local band, King joined the punk-metal band Brats, where he met Hank Sherman, who later assisted Michael Denner with his project. Later, the musicians came together to form the Mercyful Fate band.
