He went to the School of Visual Arts after high school and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After graduation, he worked as a freelance painter for Jumbo Pictures. He later moved to New York and began creating various artworks, including his first toy, Companion, in 1999.

Since then, he has been exhibiting paintings and other art products from Paris, the United States, and Europe. In 2012, he participated in one of the largest museum exhibitions in Atlanta, Georgia, at the High Museum of Art. Since creating the toy, he has worked with several Japanese companies, including Nigo and Medicom Toy, and together they ran OriginalFake Company from 2006 to 2013.

In 2004, Kaws worked on a billboard project with others such as Undefeated Brand. In 2008, he collaborated on guitar picks with John Mayer, and that same year, he designed the cover art for various musicians such as Towa Tei and Kanye West, as well as the Hike Air Force 1. For his artworks, he has collaborated with many people from various organizations and countries. Nigo commissioned The Kaws Album, a painting by Kaws, in April 2019 and sold the artwork for $14.7 million.
