John Cameron Urschel was born on June 24, 1991, to parents John Urschel and Venita Parker in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His father is a doctor, and his mother is a lawyer. He spent the majority of his childhood in Buffalo, New York, where he went to Canisius High School.

Urschel later earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Pennsylvania State University. He received the William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the “academic Heisman,” while in college.

John Urschel’s Profession & Career

John Urschel began his professional football career in 2014 when he was drafted in the fifth round by the Baltimore Ravens. He appeared in 11 games for the Ravens in his rookie season. The following season, he appeared in 16 games for the team, starting seven of them.

Urschel announced his retirement from professional football in 2017 at the age of 26 after three seasons. According to The Baltimore Sun, he retired due to the JAMA study on the prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in deceased players.

When Urschel was an undergraduate student at Penn State, he taught new students integral vector calculus, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. In 2015, he co-authored a paper titled “A Cascadia Multigrid Algorithm for Computing the Fiedler Vector of Graph Laplacians” in the Journal of Computational Mathematics. He finished 12th with 3.0 points in the Under 1700 rating section at the 2015 Pittsburgh Open.

Urschel began a Ph.D. program in mathematics at MIT in 2016, specializing in spectral graph theory, numerical linear algebra, and machine learning. He did not disclose that he was a full-time graduate student at MIT after he retired from football. He had an Erdos number of 4 in 2017.

Urschel was named to Forbes’ list of the “30 under 30” outstanding young scientists. He won academic awards for his math prowess while playing for the Ravens. He received a Senior CLASS Award in 2013. He received the James E. Sullivan Award and the William V. Campbell Trophy the same year. From 2016 to 2018, Urschel received the Dean of Science Fellowship.
