Edmond began his professional career in the minor leagues in 1988. He was drafted by the California Angels and later traded to the Bend Bucks, where he appeared in 35 games. The following season, he appeared in 31 games for the Quad Cities Angels. He joined the Palm Springs Angels in 1990 and remained there in 1991.

The following year, he was drafted by the Midland Angels and later by the Edmonton Trappers. He played in these minor leagues before making his major league debut in September 1993 with the California Angels. He remained on the team until 1999.

From 2000 to 2007, he was a member of his all-time favourite team, the St. Louis Cardinals. He was an all-star for three years, a Gold Glove winner for six years, and a member of a World Series team in 2006.
