Marsch began playing soccer in college. He began his career at Princeton University, where he scored 16 goals as a midfielder and forward. In terms of his professional career, he was picked in the third round by D.C. United. In his two seasons there, he only appeared in 15 games. Marsch immediately became a staple in Chicago’s roster, where he remained until 2005. He was instrumental in the Fire’s MLS Cup victory in 1998, giving him three league titles in three years. With Chicago, he also won the US Open Cup three times (1998, 2000, and 2003).

Furthermore, following the 2005 season, Marsch was moved to Chivas USA, where Bradley was coaching at the time. Marsch is one of just 14 players to have appeared in all 14 seasons of Major League Soccer. On February 5, 2010, he announced his departure from Chivas Regal after four seasons to pursue a coaching career.

For two years, Marsch was a member of the United States national team. He made his debut as a substitute in a scoreless World Cup qualifying match against Trinidad and Tobago on November 11, 2001; on June 2, 2007, he made his second appearance in a 4–1 friendly victory over China in San Jose, California.

Coaching Profession

Following his retirement, Marsch became an assistant coach for the United States men’s national team under Bob Bradley, his former college and club coach. Marsch remained with the US program until Bradley’s resignation in July 2011. In August 2011, Marsch was chosen the first head coach of the Montreal Impact, a Major League Soccer expansion team. Similarly, he succeeded Mike Petke as head coach of the New York Red Bulls in January 2015. Marsch retired as the Red Bulls’ all-time winningest coach in July 2018.

In July 2018, Marsch agreed to a two-year deal with RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick to serve as his assistant for the 2018–19 season. Marsch was also unveiled as the new head coach of Red Bull Salzburg on June 6, 2019. In the 2020–21 season, Marsch led Salzburg to their third consecutive cup title.

Marsch will take over as the next head coach of RB Leipzig, following Julian Nagelsmann, beginning in the 2021–22 season. On February 28, 2022, Marsch was named head coach of Premier League outfit Leeds United. Leeds lost 1–0 at Leicester City on March 5, Marsch’s first game as manager; eight days later, they won 2–1 at home against Norwich City.
