After graduating, Howard Schultz worked as a salesman for Xerox Corporation until being promoted to a sales representative. In 1979, he joined a Swedish drip coffee maker as General Manager for US operations, and in 1982, he joined Starbucks as Director of Marketing.

When he went to Milan, Italy, for Starbucks, he saw that there were coffee shops on every street that provided espresso coffee. People gathered in these bars to socialize. These were part of the Italian cultural ethos. He attempted to implement the Italian approach at Starbucks, but he received little assistance from management.
