Herschel Walker’s Profession & Career

In 1983, Herschel Walker signed a professional football contract with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL). He also won the USFL rushing championship two years in a row with them, in 1983 and 1985. In the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys and signed in 1986. In 1988, he established himself as a premier NFL running back during his three-year deal with Dallas. With his NFL career highs, he also became regarded as a one-man offense.

In 1989, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, where he made an impressive debut against the Green Bay Packers, running for the most yards in franchise history. Similarly, he entered the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation’s bobsled team. After three seasons in Minnesota from 1986 to 1989, he was re-signed by the Philadelphia Eagles for two years from 1992 to 1994. In 1994, Walker became the first NFL player to have 90-yard one-play gains rushing, catching, and kick-returning in a single season. He then signed a three-year deal with the New York Giants in 1995. Walker, however, was unable to play as a third-down back, and as a result, he only spent one season with the Giants. He was re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys until 1997 when he retired from football. He ended his football career with the same team with which he began his NFL career. Furthermore, according to his career statistics, he ranked fifth in the USFL and NFL for combined rushing numbers. In addition, he was named to Sports Illustrated’s NCAA Football All-Century Team in 1999.

Herschel Walker is a mixed martial artist as well. In 2007, he appeared as a guest on an HDNet show called “Inside MMA.” In September 2009, he was also signed by the MMA promotion company Strikeforce to compete in their heavyweight division.
