George Soros’s Profession & Career

Soros’s first employment was as a wholesaler, where he worked as a determined salesperson after being unemployed since graduating. Before settling for a position at Singer and Friedlander in 1954, he had difficulty passing interviews because many of the companies embarrassed him. He worked as a clerk at his company until 1956, when he moved to New York to work as an arbitrage trader for F.M. Mayer until 1959. He moved on to Wertheim & Co, where he worked as an analyst.

Between 1963 to 1969, George was the vice president of Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder, where he invested heavily, increasing the company’s earnings. He started Soros Fund Management in 1970 and became its CEO; prior to that, he founded another firm the previous year, making it difficult for him to manage both. Following the renaming of one of his funds to ‘Quantum Fund,’ the companies continued to develop, earning him a lot and increasing his net worth.

As a businessman and investor, he was involved in various ventures such as pound short in 1992, which included fumigating pounds for months, and the Société Générale insider trade in 1988, in which he was asked by the owner to purchase shares. Earlier this year, in Macedonia, he launched the stop operation Soros campaign, which tries to provide feedback on how he performs globally.

Achievements and Awards

His first honor was receiving degrees from Oxford and other colleges in 1980. In 2000, he received a Yale International Centre medal from the school mainframe, where he later earned a degree in economics from the University of Bologna in 1995. He was admitted into Institutional Investors Alpha’s Hedge Fund Hall of Fame and as one of the top 20 hedge fund managers.
