Sabates finished his education at a military school in Camagüey. He and his family moved to Miami, Florida, when he was 15 years old.

Sabates worked in a variety of odd jobs after arriving in the United States, including washing pots and pans at a hospital and working in motels. He then worked as a salesman at the City Chevrolet car dealership in Downtown Charlotte. He achieved record car sales and was appointed as the manufacturer’s representative.

Sabates began working as a salesman for Top Sales Company, Inc., which sold retail products, in 1969.
