Edward Joseph Mahoney was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 21, 1949, to a big family of Irish Catholics. Dorothy Elizabeth, his mother, was a homemaker, and Daniel Patrick Mahoney, his father, was a police officer. He grew raised on Long Island in Levittown, New York, although he also spent time in Woodhaven, Queens.
