Attenborough was born in the Middlesex town of Isleworth. Frederick, his father, was a principal at Leicester University College, where he grew up in the college house. He is the younger brother of director, producer, and actor Richard Attenborough, who died in 2014, and the older brother of Alfa Romeo executive John Attenborough, who died in 2012. David spent most of his childhood collecting fossils, stones, and natural specimens.

He offered to supply newts at the University zoology department when he was barely 11 years old, for 3d each. Amber, one of his adoptive sisters, presents him with a piece of prehistorical creatures that he will focus on in the future in his program The Amber Time Machine. Attenborough was influenced by Grey Owl’s lecture at De Montfort Hall in Leicester, which he attended with his brother and where he advocated for conservation.

He attended Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester before going on to Clare College, Cambridge, where he received a scholarship. He majored in geology and zoology in college, earning a degree in natural sciences. The Royal Navy hired him for two years of national service in North Wales and the Firth of Forth.

In 1949, he began working at an educational publishing house after finishing his studies. Later, he became a television producer for the British Broadcasting Corporation, for which he had already completed the training process. Together with reptile Curator Jack Lester, he produced “Zoo Quest,” a television series in which live animals were filmed in the wild and in zoos.

In 1965, Attenborough became the controller of BBC-2, the BBC’s new second television channel, where he helped launch dramatic productions such as The Forsyte Saga and landmark cultural, educational series such as Jacob Bronowski’s The Ascent of Man and Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation, as well as Monty Python Flying Circus, a seminal comedy series that he aired. He worked for the BBC as a director of television programming before leaving to write and produce television series on a freelance basis.

Natural history and life series television programs such as Life on Earth, The Living Planet, The Trials of Life, Life in the Freezer, The Private Life of Plants, The Life of Birds, and The Life of Mammals were written and narrated by Attenborough. Other notable works include Life in the Undergrowth and Life in Cold Blood, The Blue Planet, a study of the world’s oceans, State of the Planet, and Are We Changing Planet Earth?

In 2017, he also narrated Blue Planet II but did not write anything about it. He also narrated “Our Planet,” an eight-part Netflix series that aired in 2019. In addition, the BBC broadcasted “Climate Change – The Facts,” a documentary that warned society about its impending collapse if it did not act.
