Following that position, he worked as a journalist for United Press for eight years, from 1950 to 1958, for several Texas radio stations, and even for the Houston Chronicle from 1954 to 1955.

While attending Sam Houston State, this anchor worked for KSAM-FM radio in Huntsville, calling junior high, high school, and Sam Houston State football games. He held the position of play-by-play announcer for the University of Houston football team for about four seasons.
