Who is Charles Sykes? Charles Sykes was born in Seattle, Washington, on November 11, 1954. He is a 65-year-old man. Later in life, he lived in New York City and Fox Point, Wisconsin. He started his career as a journalist in 1975, working for a year at the weekly The Northeast Post in West Allis, Wisconsin. He started reporting on stories in the North Shore suburbs for The Milwaukee Journal in 1976. Sykes came to Cleveland as a staff writer for Cleveland Magazine after seven years of working in the Milwaukee area. However, by the end of the year, the paper had gone out of business. In 1983, he returned to Milwaukee as managing editor of Milwaukee Magazine, and in January 1984, he was promoted to editor-in-chief. For Milwaukee Magazine, he wrote features, investigative pieces, and commentary.

Sykes, too, has been a published author, mainly in the field of education. Profscam: Professors and the Demise of Higher Education, his first book, was published in 1988 and was inspired by his father’s article, which was published posthumously in October 1985. He’s written for Imprimis, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications. He also served as an editor for WI Interest magazine and the Right Wisconsin website.

WTMJ settled a libel case with Spanish Journal editor Robert Miranda for $5,000 on July 26, 2005, over a November 2004 blog post by Sykes alleging that Miranda in 1991. It organized a violent demonstration at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in response to a “pro-American” rally, facts that Sykes later retracted. He did not vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. Instead of campaigning against him, they chose to write in independent environmental candidate Evan McMullin. Sykes revealed in October 2016 that he had decided to leave his radio show late in 2015 for undisclosed personal reasons.

Sykes wrote an op-ed in the New York Times in December 2016 claiming that the conservative movement had lost its way during the referendum. Over time, we’d succeeded in fully delegitimizing the media—all the usual checkpoints had been knocked down, and the referees had been discredited.”

Sykes co-hosted Indivisible, a call-in talk show broadcast by WNYC public radio in New York City, with Brian Lehrer of WNYC and Kerri Miller of Minnesota Public Radio, among others, from January to April 2017. The show looked back on President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office and debated them. Sykes took over as the new host of The Daily Standard, The Weekly Standard Magazine’s resurrected podcast, in February 2018.

In 1983, Sykes worked as an investigative reporter for WISN-TV. He anchored the local Sunday morning talk show Sunday Insight for WTMJ-TV from 1993 to 2016. Sykes wrote an essay for the ITVS series “Declarations: Essays on American Ideals” in 1994. He has not been nominated for any honors and has not earned any.
