Frederick Carlton Lewis was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 1, 1961. Lewis comes from a sporting family. Evelyn née Lawler Lewis, his mother, is a retired track and field athlete, and his father, William Lewis, was a track coach. Carl’s parents founded the Willingboro Track Club in 1967 to develop local talent. Carl and his sister, Coral, were deeply affected by this. His father was their first coach, and he trained them. Carl’s younger sister, the Coral, is also a former track and field competitor.

Carl competed in the long jump event at the age of 13 under the tutelage of Andy Dudek and Paul Minore. He was able to wow several observers during that event. He was ranked fourth all-time in the World Junior long jump. Many colleges approached him, but he chose the University of Houston, where he met his lifetime coach, Tom Tellez. In 1979, shortly after graduating, he set a new record in the long jump, jumping 8.13 meters. This placed him fifth in the world in the long jump.
