Buzz Aldrin was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, on January 20, 1930. Edwin Eugene Aldrin Sr., his father, was a retired military veteran. Marion Aldrin was his mother’s name. Both of his parents later committed suicide at different times, prompting Aldrin to explain his depression as inherited. Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. was his given name at the time. Later, in 1988, he changed his first name to Buzz. Buzz is an abbreviation for Buzzer, his childhood nickname.

In 1947, he graduated from Montclair High School. He then enrolled in the United States Military Academy before joining the United States Air Force.

Aldrin graduated from the Military Academy in 1951 with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During the Korean War, Aldrin served as a fighter pilot. After the war, Aldrin became an instructor at the United States Air Force Academy.

He graduated from the Air Force Base Maxell Squadron Officer School in 1955. Buzz enrolled as a graduate student at the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1959. He received his Sc.D. in astronautics from M.I.T. in 1963. His doctoral dissertation focused on Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques. This was especially important for manned orbital rendezvous in space.

He joined the Air Force Space Division. NASA chose him as an astronaut in October 1963. He was confirmed as a Gemini 12 pilot. Aldrin established a record for extravehicular activity (EVA), demonstrating that astronauts could work outside spacecraft.

The Apollo-11 mission made history on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first and second persons to walk on the Moon.

Aldrin left NASA in July 1971. He was then appointed Commandant of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School, from which he retired in March 1972, after 21 years of service.

After retiring, Aldrin continued to speak in support of space exploration. He also proposed the Aldrin cycler, a modified spacecraft trajectory for spacecraft travel to Mars that used less rocket fuel.

In 1993, he developed a game called Buzz Aldrin’s Race Into Space. In 2009, to honor the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing, Aldrin collaborated on the creation of Rocket Experience, a rap single and video. This was done in partnership with Snoop Dogg’s nonprofit ShareSpace and others.

Aldrin provided the voice for the Simpsons episode Deep Space Homer and the Futurama episode Cold Warriors. Aldrin appeared in the blockbuster film Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011.

In 2012, he starred in the Japanese film Space Brothers, as well as in the Big Bang Theory episode The Holographic Excitation, and as the voice of a character in the video game Mass Effect 3. At age 86, Aldrin visited the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica in 2016, becoming the oldest person to do so.

Buzz Aldrin has received various honors and medals. In 1969, he received the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal for his role as Apollo 11’s lunar module pilot. He also received the Legion of Merit for his contributions to the Gemini and Apollo programs. In 1972, he received a second Distinguished Service Medal, this time with an oak leaf cluster, for his contributions to the Korean War and the space program.
