Bryant Charles Gumbel was born in New Orleans on September 29, 1948. Richard Dunbar Gumbel was a judge, and Rhea Alice LeCesne worked as a clerk. His parents were both of Louisiana Creole descent. His surname was derived from his Jewish-German ancestors.

He grew up on Chicago’s South Side. He graduated from the De La Salle Institute. He graduated from Bates College with a degree in Russian history in 1970. He also edited Black Sports Magazine for a year before leaving in 1972.

Bryant Gumbel’s Profession & Career

Bryant Gumbel began his television anchoring career with KNBC-TV in October 1972. He became their Los Angeles-based sportscaster.

Gumbel co-hosted the National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck in 1975 for NBC Sports. He worked for NBC until 1982, and he hosted several NBC sporting events, including Major League Baseball, college basketball, and the National Football League.

He left NBC in 1982 to host The Today Show. He was named Today’s primary anchor. He covered sporting events and broadcast from the Vatican, Europe, Vietnam, South America, and, of course, the United States. Between 1984 and 1988, his work earned him a lot of popularity, fans, and several Emmy awards. He became Today’s third longest-serving TV host.

In 1988, he returned to NBC to oversee the sports coverage of the Seoul Olympics. He covered the PGA Tour in 1990. He retired from the Today show in 1997, after 15 years of service.

Gumbel also collaborated with CBS. He took over as host of a new primetime newsmagazine. This was called Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel and aired from 1997 to 1998. One of the episodes, The Reckoning, even won a Peabody Award in 1988.

He began hosting the Early Show in 1999, after previously hosting several other shows. When the Twin Towers were attacked on September 11, 2001, he was the first to inform CBS viewers. Gumbel left CBS in 2002, and with him the hosting of The Early Show.

Gumbel made a cameo appearance alongside Nicholas Cage and Michael Caine in the film The Weather Man, in which he plays a TV host.

Gumbel is a legendary sportscaster who has won numerous awards, the most notable of which are four Emmys. Other notable awards include the Peabody Award for his reports from Vietnam and the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award for broadcast journalism.
