His international career began in 1998, when he was elected to the United States ski team and competed in the Nagano Winter Olympics. Unfortunately, he did not receive a medal in that competition. In 2001, he was injured while competing in the Federation Internationale de Ski in St. Anton, Austria, when a crash tore ligaments in his left knee. In that particular tournament, he won a silver medal.

His performance improved with each passing year. He set a world record in 2003 by becoming the first American to win two gold medals in a single championship.
