Leslie Hope was born in Eltham, London, England, on May 29, 1903. His father, William Henry Hope, was a skilled stonemason, and his mother, Avis Townes, was an opera singer. Bob Hope emigrated to the United States with his family when he was four, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. He had six brothers, including producer Jack Hope, businessmen Ivor Hope, George Hope, actor James Hope, and Frederick Hope, but most died when he was young. Bob Hope grew up in Cleveland, where he attended the Boys’ Industrial School and later a ballet school.

He began appearing on television in the 1950s, when television was still in its infancy, hosted the Academy Awards (Oscars) multiple times, and embarked on his tours and concerts. Going Spanish, a 1934 short musical comedy film, is regarded as Bob Hop’s first appearance. His first long significant character film, The Big Broadcast of 1938, was released in 1938.
