Following graduation, Belichick began working as an assistant to Bill Belichick, the head coach of the Baltimore Colts. In 1976, he joined the Detroit Lions as an assistant special teams coach.

Belichick began a 12-year career with the New York Giants as a defensive assistant and special teams coach in 1979, working with head coach Ray Perkins. In 1980, he began teaching linebackers to his duties, and in 1985, he was named defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells, who had replaced Perkins in 1983. The Giants won Super Bowls XXI and XXV following their seasons in 1986 and 1990, respectively.

He was also the head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995. He returned to the Patriots as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for the 1996 season after being dismissed by the Cleveland Browns.

In February 1997, Belichick was named interim head coach of the New York Jets. In 2000, the Patriots concluded the regular season 5–11 and did not make the playoffs. After going 11–5 in the regular season and defeating the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers, they won the Super Bowl in 2001. Similarly, the Patriots finished 9–7 in their first game at Gillette Stadium the following season and missed the playoffs.

In 2004, the Patriots finished 14–2, and they progressed to the Divisional Round by defeating the Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots finished the 2006 season with a 12–4 record and a 37–16 Wild Card Round victory against the New York Jets.

In 2007, Belichick led the Patriots to their first-ever perfect regular season. Tom Brady suffered a season-ending injury in the first quarter of the Patriots’ season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. The backup quarterback, Matt Cassel, has been named the starter for the remainder of the season. In 2009, Belichick led the Patriots to another AFC East division title with a 10–6 record, this time with a fully healthy Tom Brady as a quarterback.

Belichick and the Patriots went 14–2 in 2010, 13–3 in 2011, 2-2 in 2012, 12-4 in 2015, 14-2 in 2016, and 13-3 in 2017. On May 13, 2019, Belichick announced that he will be the New England Patriots’ new head coach.
