Ahrendts moved to New York City to pursue a fashion career. Ahrendts joined Donna Karan International in 1989 after working in merchandising at bra manufacturer Warnaco. She worked to grow the premium brand internationally through wholesale and licensing. Leslie Wexner hired her in 1996 to expand Henri Bendel stores into 50 new markets, but the initiative was canceled by the board of directors two years later.

Ahrendts was hired by Burberry in January 2006, and she took over as CEO on July 1, 2006, succeeding Rose Marie Bravo. Ahrendts responded to the brand’s reputation erosion by immediately limiting the amount of Burberry check-patterned apparel and accessories to 10%, reducing the sales harm caused by widespread counterfeiting.
