Despite losing his first match in 1996, he refocused and competed in 1999, finishing sixth in the United States and first in the world in Open Junior. In the years 2000 and 2001, he beat Fernando Vicente, Fabrice Santoro, Joachim Johansson, and Michael Chang, among others.
