Alexander made his professional debut with Dynamo Moscow at the age of 16. Before being drafted by the NHL, he scored 32 goals in three seasons with Dynamo Moscow. He appeared in 21 games and scored four points in 2001-02. He was drafted by the Washington Capitals for the 2004 NHL season.
