Al Sharpton was born on October 3, 1954, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, to Ada (née Richards) and Alfred Charles Sharpton Sr. On his tour with gospel singer Mahalia Jackson when Al was four years old, he spoke his first sermon.

Al’s father abandoned Ada in 1963 to pursue a relationship with his half-sister. Ada worked as a cleaner but was forced to rely on welfare and relocate from middle-class Hollis, Queens, to public housing in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Al attended Brooklyn College for two years after graduating from Samuel J. Tilden High School.

Jesse Jackson appointed Al to the position of youth director of Operation Breadbasket in New York City (1969). Al established the National Youth Movement and gathered funds for youth (1971). He was the youth director for African-American Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s presidential campaign (1972). Al was James Brown’s tour manager (1973-1980).

Al became well-known nationally for his protests against racial and religious discrimination. On December 20, 1986, three African-American men were followed into the Belt Parkway by three white men in Howard Beach, Queens. Michael Griffith was killed there by a passing automobile.

Later, on December 27, Al led 1,200 people through the streets of Howard Beach. Al rose to prominence as a result of his performance. He spearheaded protests following the death of Amadou Diallo, a Guinean immigrant who was shot to death by NYPD cops in 1999 but was acquitted. Al said that Diallo died as a result of police brutality and racial profiling. The family of Amadou Diallo was granted $3 million.

Tyisha Miller, a 19-year-old African-American woman, was shot by police in central Riverside, California, in December 1998. Tyisha was discovered asleep in a locked automobile with a flat tire and the engine turned on. Her vehicle was parked at a nearby gas station. When officers from the Riverside Police Department arrived and spotted a revolver on her lap, her relatives contacted 911.

Cynthia shook and foamed at the mouth. Officers forced their way into the vehicle. One reached for the firearm, but she awoke and clutched it, prompting the officers to shoot her 23 times. The cops were all found not guilty. According to reports, a group of protesters was arrested along the busy SR 91.


Sean Bell was shot and killed by plainclothes officers on November 25, 2006, in the Jamaica district of Queens, New York. Three of the five cops were charged with manslaughter but were found not guilty. On May 7, 2008, Al and others demonstrated peacefully near major river crossings in New York City, including the Brooklyn Bridge, Queens-borough Bridge, Triborough Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Holland Tunnel, and Queens–Midtown Tunnel. Over 200 protesters were detained.

On August 28, 2017, the 44th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was held in Washington, D.C. All coordinated the Minister’s March for Justice in Washington, D.C., where he promised several clergy members. Thousands of religious leaders, including Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs, attended.
